Draught ale of the month: Tom Paine (July)
Released each year on 4 July in recognition of American Independence Day, Tom Paine, a premium dry hopped bitter, strong pale ale was awarded silver medal at the BBI Awards in 1993.
The beer was named for the radical Thomas Paine who lived, worked, married and debated in Lewes before heading off to the United States to make history. There’s even a room in The Dorset named after him and you can read more about him if you stay in it. After the 200th anniversary last year of his death, this year should see the erection of a statue in honour of the great man outside the library in Station Street.
Come into the garden
The Dorset is blessed with the largest beer garden in Lewes. With its sunny aspect, a view of Harvey’s Brewery chimney nearby, ample seating and umbrellas, attractive planting and good separation for smokers and non-smokers, The Dorset’s garden is a real draw. Look out for occasional barbecues and Morris dancers to add to the enjoyment.
